Residential Development
(Requirements for Residential Electric Service)

Requirements for electric service vary depending upon the job. Some or all of the requirements below may apply. Once you request service, we’ll help you understand exactly what’s required. We’ll also clarify what’s your responsibility and what’s ours.

Planning

  • You’ll need to provide us permission to install and maintain power lines, electrical equipment and street lights, if applicable, on your property. If access to other properties is required, you’ll need to reimburse us for any fees we incur.
  • There may be a charge in some cases to establish a new line or provide street lighting. If so, these charges must be paid before our construction can begin. We’ll determine whether charges apply after a field inspection.
  • We design and construct underground systems along the most economical and mutually satisfactory route. Any change in the route will require a re-estimate of terms and conditions for service and may result in charges paid by you.
  • If you are requesting service in someone’s name, we will send that person a ratepayer confirmation form to verify that he or she will accept billing.

Construction

  • Contact PPL Electric Utilities and other utilities several weeks before you start installation of sewer or water mains to arrange a pre-construction meeting. This way, utilities can coordinate construction and avoid unnecessary costs and delays. If we must relocate underground lines because of changes to a property or its use, the changes will be made at the developer’s or property owner’s expense.
  • After receiving PPL’s proposed design, provide two weeks’ notice prior to installing conduits across roads. This will give us time to secure and deliver the conduits.
  • Before we begin our work, install curbing, grade and stone roadways to allow easy access, grade electric easements to within six inches of final grade, and install property line markers.
  • For underground service, dig the trench and provide and install bedding material according to our specifications. Once we’ve installed service, backfill and restore the surface to final grade according our specifications. Please note that state law requires you to call 811 at least three days before you dig so that utilities can mark the location of any existing underground lines or equipment.
  • Keep easements clear of equipment and obstructions while we install electric service.

Post Construction

  • Have the meter base and main panel inspected by a Uniform Construction Code inspector. To find a UCC inspector in your area, look under “Inspection Bureaus” in your yellow pages or call your municipality.

Additional Information:
Refer to PPL’s Rules for Electric Meter and Service Installation for more detailed information. Specific guidelines for electrical equipment installation and trenching can be found in the Customer Reference Specifications section of REMSI.
