Electric meters are automated, but you can still take your own readings
PPL Electric Utilities uses Automated Meter Reading technology to read your meter. The meter sends an electronic signal of your use and demand to PPL Electric. We no longer have to send an employee to read the meter.
Automated meters have significantly reduced the number of estimated bills, improved outage restoration processes, and provide additional customer information to respond to questions about your account. We continue to look for uses of this metering technology that improve our service to customers.
With automated meters you can still take your own meter readings to monitor electricity use and demand. Bills for most industrial and commercial customers have both a usage and a demand component. Demand represents the amount of electricity you require at any given moment. The meter averages and displays demand in 15-minute intervals.
To read the meter..
Click on the link above for guidelines that will help you read various types of meters used for businesses. Some have mechanical dials that record electricity use. Below the dials, maximum demand is displayed electronically. Some have digital readouts of use and demand. As you look at the meter, the readouts will alternate.
The meter may have a multiplier constant figure that you can find on the meter face. Remember to multiply your readings for use and demand by the constant number.
