Stray Voltage Solutions

There are three basic solutions to stray voltage problems:

  1. Eliminate or minimize the voltage causing the problem
  2. Isolate the voltage from any equipment in the vicinity of the potential animal-contact points
  3. Install an equi-potential plane that will keep all possible animal contact points at the same voltage potential.
The right solution for the situation depends on:
  • The source or sources of voltage
  • The magnitude of the voltage
  • Cost of alternative solutions
  • The physical facilities involved
  • Policies of the power supplier
Remember, a remedy based on an incorrect diagnosis can cause an even-worse problem, so make sure you get the help you need.

If the stray voltage problem can be traced to a breakdown or malfunction of a specific piece of equipment, section of farmstead wiring, or an electric fence, the solution tends to be pretty straightforward. Get the problem piece of equipment or system replaced or repaired.
