Residential Audit

The first step in conducting a residential site audit is to get the proper information. This includes:

• Determining the type of equipment the resident is having trouble with, and
  
• When the trouble occurs. Is it during the day? At night? During thunderstorms?

The resident's problem may be as simple as blinking displays on clocks, VCRs and microwave ovens. The best solution for this is to replace the appliances with newer models that have a built in battery backup. It probably would not be cost effective to purchase a UPS to protect these types of home equipment.

If the resident's equipment is damaged, the auditor must determine the cause. If the damage was caused by lightning, a surge suppressor is the recommendation. If the damage occurred on a clear day, a voltage check should be made.

If it is suspected that the home's electrical system is malfunctioning, a wiring and grounding check is necessary. Most residential problems are solved by wiring and grounding corrections, and by installing surge protection equipment.
