New criteria established for placement on GS-1, GS-3 rate schedules

Better aligns customer rates with PPL Electric Utilities’ costs to serve

PPL Electric Utilities has adopted new criteria for determining the rate schedule for new business customers. The criteria are part of distribution rate changes that took effect Jan. 1, 2008, and were approved by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.

New commercial and industrial customers will be placed on rate schedule GS-1 if they receive single-phase service below 12,000 volts, while customers receiving three-phase service below 12,000 volts will be placed on rate schedule GS-3.

Previously, new customers were eligible for either rate schedule.

The change better aligns our rates with the cost to serve customers. It’s more expensive to install and maintain three-phase service, which requires additional transformers and more costly metering devices. Three-phase service provides increased capacity for customers with higher demand.

The change does not affect existing GS-1 and GS-3 customers, who may remain in their present rate schedule or switch between the two rates up through Jan. 1, 2010, subject to the rules and restrictions that were in effect before Jan. 1, 2008.
