Time-of-Use Option
PPL Electric Utilities’ time-of-use option is another option you now have to purchase electricity. It is priced different based on market prices for peak and off-peak hours of the day, so it is suitable only for those customers who can adjust when they use most electricity.
Time-of-use rates change every three months (March, June, September and December) to better reflect the costs PPL Electric Utilities incurs to purchase electricity on behalf of customers who enroll in this rate plan. This is similar to all electric utilities in Pennsylvania. The new prices are communicated as soon as they are approved by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.
To protect consumers from “slamming” – the switching of electricity suppliers without the customers’ knowledge – the state’s utility law requires a period of 16 days before a customer’s request to switch to an alternate rate or supplier can be finalized.
Additionally, PPL Electric Utilities bills are not calculated on a daily basis. This means that a customer requesting to switch in the middle of the billing cycle must wait until the next billing period to be switched.
Customers are strongly encouraged to study the pricing for time-of-use rates. For residential and residential thermal storage customers, the peak hours are longer in the summer season based on increased demand for power regionally.
You may have the opportunity to save more by switching to a competitive supplier rather than using our time-of-use option. We encourage you to explore all of your options.
