Energy Costs

Over the last decade, energy prices have increased significantly, but the average price of electricity in Pennsylvania has not because of rate caps that have kept prices at 1990s levels. This chart is part of document prepared by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission called "Electric Restructuring: The Transition from Rate Caps to Market-Based Pricing."

Electricity prices are increasing.
They mirror increases in all types of energy: gasoline, natural gas, heating oil, etc.

During this period of increasing prices, the PPL Electric Utilities rates for generation supply have been capped at 1990s levels. So instead of experiencing a gradual increase over time, customers of PPL Electric Utilities face a one-time increase after 2009, when 11 years of price controls come to an end.

PPL Electric Utilities has made no secret of the expected increase, and is giving you options that will help you use energy wisely, reduce electricity use to offset much of the increase, and spread out the increase over several years.

PPL Electric Utilities continues to offer a range of assistance programs for customers with financial hardships. These programs have been in place for 25 years, and offer customers in need cash grants, reduced payment plans, debt forgiveness, energy education and energy-saving measures for their homes.
