Information on pole attachments

PPL Electric Utilities constantly evaluates new methods for communications attachments. This page outlines a few of the new attachments we are working on and information for attaching companies.

Wireless Devices and Surveillance Cameras

PPL Electric Utilities has worked with law enforcement in several areas to allow the installation of self-contained, wireless surveillance camera networks on their distribution poles. Law enforcement agencies should contact the pole attachments group via our contact us page to inquire about installing a wireless surveillance network.

We also have worked with municipalities and education facilities to provide monitoring of certain areas.

All other requests can be submitted through our online application management system. The completed application must include spec sheet for all attachments to be installed. These specs must include the dimensions of the unit and how it will be attached to PPL facilities.

Wireless Antenna Attachments

With wireless technology rapidly improving, PPL Electric Utilities has identified the potential for wireless antennas to be installed on wood distribution poles. We are evaluating the best methods for attachment and developing a spec for these attachments in the future. Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Wireless antennas are not allowed to be installed on poles with the following facilities:

 Transformers
X  Air break or load break switches
X  Recloses
X  Risers (communications or PPL Electric Utilities secondary/primary)
X  Capacitor controls
 Existing electrical service entrance
 Four-way junction

All new attachers must sign a Wireless Antenna Attachment License Agreement prior to applying. This process can be initiated through the contact us page. Once an agreement is signed, applications can be submitted through our online application management system. The completed application must include spec sheet for all attachments to be installed. These specs must include the dimensions of the unit and how it will be attached to PPL facilities.
