Rates and Shopping

Shopping 101

Learn more about shopping for your electricity supply.

At PPL Electric, we deliver electricity to your home, but we don’t own or operate the power plants where that electricity is generated. Electric suppliers handle that part of the process. In Pennsylvania, you can shop for a supplier based on price or other factors, or you’ll automatically pay the PPL Electric default rate.

If you do shop, beware of variable rates, which start small and then increase depending on the price of power.

3 Steps to Prepare You For Shopping

Follow these steps to shop smart and save money.

Step 1

Review the PPL Rate

Review the price to compare, also known as the PPL default rate. This is the rate you pay if you choose not to shop or you’re on our OnTrack program.

Step 2

Check Your Current Rate

Our bill makes it easier than ever to check the rate you’re paying for electricity and see if you can save. You can also view your rate on the Account Summary page of your online profile.

Step 3

Know What to Ask

Before selecting a supplier, ask a few questions about their offer: Will you charge a fixed or variable rate? How long is the contract term? Are there any cancellation fees?

Here are a few tips you can follow to help in the supply shopping process
  • Pay attention to the specific terms of the agreement you sign with a supplier. Sometimes suppliers offer introductory offers or special incentives. Make sure your rate doesn’t increase significantly at some point in the future. These are called “variable rates.” Often, they start low and then increase depending on the price of power.
  • Make sure you understand when your contract ends and determine if there are any cancellation fees of which you need to be aware.
  • Compare your supply rates often so you can stay on the lookout for the best rate possible.

watch out for scams

Protect yourself from energy supplier scams

We deliver your power but we don't generate it. If a supplier says they represent PPL, they aren't telling the truth.
