Emerald Ash Borer

How PPL is responding

The Emerald Ash Borer, a destructive metallic-green insect that likely hitchhiked to America on wooden packing and shipping crates from halfway across the world, is poised to eradicate ash trees along the East Coast. The insect destroys water- and nutrient-carrying tissues under the ash tree bark and kills the tree over a period of years.

powerlines in trees

We estimate 280,000 ash trees near our distribution lines will be affected.

tree on powerlines

Trees weakened by the ash borer could fall and hit power lines, causing an outage.

dead tree

Signs of infestation include branch dieback in the upper part of the tree, vertical bark splitting and woodpecker damage.

sick tree

New infestations may not show damage to the three for up to three years, according to the U.S. Forest Service
