LIGHTING THE WAY: HOW INDIAN VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY IS SAVING ENERGY AND INSPIRING THE COMMUNITY

For decades, the Indian Valley Public Library (IVPL) has served as a vibrant hub where residents gather to learn, connect and explore. But by late 2024, the library faced a growing challenge: its aging lighting system made it harder for patrons to comfortably browse the stacks and for staff to provide a safe, welcoming environment. The 1960s-era building was ready for a new chapter, one that would improve visibility, reduce operating costs and support long‑term sustainability.

That chapter began when IVPL partnered with the PPL Electric Business Energy Efficiency Program and received a comprehensive energy assessment. The PPL Electric team suggested upgrading all interior and exterior lighting to energy‑efficient LED fixtures. With expert guidance from PPL Electric and contractor Beyond the Bulb, the library moved forward with a full lighting retrofit in January 2025.

The results were immediate and long‑lasting. The project is expected to save 225,380 kWh of energy annually, delivering an estimated $24,848 in yearly cost savings. The library also received $33,807 in incentives through PPL Electric, helping make the transformation even more affordable.

Beyond the numbers, the impact is felt every day. “As a nonprofit, that money saved can now help us take on the next challenges in our 1960s building,” shared Suzi Leonard, Board of Trustees. “The benefits are already manifesting themselves in cheers from patrons who no longer struggle to find a book in the dark stacks.”
