PPL Electric UtilitiesSUMMER BILLS: WHAT'S DRIVING COSTS AND WAYS YOU CAN SAVE
The summer heat can be unbearable. But keeping your business cool and comfortable for employees and customers may be causing your electric bill to increase.
For many businesses, energy use increases during the summer as cooling systems work harder and operations consume more electricity. Changes in electricity supply prices and distribution rates may also contribute to higher monthly bills.

As your local electric company, we deliver electricity to your home, but we don’t own or operate the power plants where that electricity is generated. In Pennsylvania, you can shop for a third-party supplier based on price or other factors, or you’ll automatically pay the Price to Compare.
If you have a supplier, now is a good time to check the price you’re paying and use the Price to Compare as a benchmark. Many customers sign up with a supplier that initially offers a lower rate but lose track of contract terms or supplier notifications and end up shifting to a variable rate that is much higher than the Price to Compare.
In May, business customers paying rates above the Price to Compare collectively paid about $2.1 million more than the default rate, while those paying below it saved approximately $3.6 million. These differences reflect the range of products and pricing options available in the competitive market. With the cost of materials and operations continuing to rise, every dollar counts. Taking a few minutes to review your options and regularly check the price you’re paying for supply can help you stay informed and avoid paying more than necessary.
5 WAYS TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR SUMMER BILL:

ASK DOUG, A PPL ELECTRIC ADVISOR
Question: We’re planning a landscaping project at one of our offices and a colleague told me to call 811 before starting work. Why is that necessary?
Answer: That’s a great question. Calling 811 before digging is not only necessary for your safety, it’s also the law.
In Pennsylvania, you must contact 811 at least three business days before any digging project, whether you’re planting a tree, installing a fence or starting a larger
excavation project. This prompts utility companies to mark the approximate location of underground lines with color-coded flags or
paint, to help you dig safely around buried infrastructure.
If you accidentally hit an underground line, you should stop work immediately, move to a safe location, and notify the utility owner. If a natural gas line is damaged, leave the area and call 911 and the utility company right away.
Safe digging is critical to protecting employees, the public and underground infrastructure. That’s why August 11 is recognized as 811 Day, an annual reminder for contractors, businesses and property owners to call 811 before starting any digging project.
Always remember to call 811 before you dig and have a safe summer!
