Debunking Data Center Myths: What you should know
With all the buzz around data centers, it’s easy for rumors and confusion to spread. Let’s set the record straight with five key facts about data centers in our service area — so you can feel confident about how they impact you.
- Data centers aren’t raising distribution rates: Our request to change distribution rates is focused on improving reliability and customer service, not because of data center development.
- They pay for their own system upgrades: Large data centers are connected to the transmission (not distribution) system. They pay for upgrades that are needed just for them — and they also share in the costs of improvements that help everyone.
- They can help lower your energy bill: Data centers, and other large customers, pay a bigger share of the transmission costs based on their energy usage. This means that as these customers are connected, the transmission part of your electric bill is expected to decrease.
- Residential customers are protected from extra costs: We make large power customers like data centers sign agreements that include financial and electricity usage commitments, so other customers stay protected from additional costs.
- Everyone plays by the same rules: As a regulated utility, we are required to treat all connection requests equally — data centers are evaluated just like any other customer wanting to connect to the grid.

Ask Yvette, a PPL Electric advisor
Question: I’ve been struggling to make ends meet and fell behind on my bills this winter. Do you offer any assistance to help me catch up?
Answer: We understand household budgets are especially strained right now, but we offer a variety of assistance programs to help. All customers, regardless of income, can apply for a payment arrangement to pay off a past-due balance over time. Budget billing is also a great option to even out seasonal swings, making your monthly payments more predictable.
Income-eligible customers can apply for our OnTrack program, which offers fixed monthly payments and debt forgiveness, or Operation HELP grants, which apply directly to PPL Electric bills and don’t need to be repaid.
LIHEAP is also open and accepting applications for grants up to $2,000 to help with winter heating bills.
