PLAY YOUR WAY TO SWEET SAVINGS: STACK UP SAVINGS THIS FALL

October is Energy Awareness Month — a great time to look for simple ways to use less energy as cooler weather arrives. We’ve included a few of the same practical tips here to help you start saving at home.

TRY THESE QUICK ENERGY-SAVING MOVES

Give your game console a break

Your game system does not need to keep running when playtime is over. Power down your console instead of leaving it on and check its power-saving settings so it uses less energy between games.

Streaming a movie or show? A smart TV or dedicated streaming device typically uses less energy than a gaming console.

Power down after the final whistle or credits

Fall weekends can mean football, movie nights and extra screen time — and your entertainment center may be using more energy than you realize.

When the show, game or movie is over, turn off the TV and any connected devices. You can also turn on your TV’s energy-saving settings and lower the screen brightness when it makes sense.

Give vampire power a rest

Some electronics keep drawing energy even when they’re not being used. This standby energy use is sometimes called “vampire power.”

Take a quick look around your home for chargers, small appliances and electronics that stay plugged in all day. Unplug items you rarely use or connect them to an advanced power strip that can help stop energy use when devices are not needed.

Give your Halloween decorations an LED glow

Going all out on the ghosts, pumpkins and otherworldly porch decorations? Choose ENERGY STAR®-certified LED light strings instead of traditional incandescent lights. LEDs use less energy and last longer. Add timers or smart plugs to your display, so your decorations turn off when everyone else turns in.

Breathe easier this fall

Fall allergy season can lead to more time with your air purifier running. ENERGY STAR-certified air purifiers are about 25% more energy efficient than standard models. Plus, you can shop for an energy-efficient air purifier from the comfort of your own home through our Online Marketplace.

ASK TRACIE, A PPL ELECTRIC ADVISOR

Question: Can you help me understand if my home is energy efficient? Where’s the best place to start?

Answer: Start with a home energy assessment. Consider a Virtual Assessment (by phone) or an In-Home Audit — neither has income limits.

A Virtual Assessment is a free, 30-minute phone call with an energy advisor, including a personalized report on efficiency recommendations and rebates. To schedule, call 1-877-486-9204.

An In-Home Audit, conducted by a Building Performance Institute-certified contractor, is a more in-depth assessment — including a blower door test — and is available with a rebate. When you schedule your audit, ask your contractor about the final audit cost (if any) after they apply the value of your rebate.

If you’re eligible based on your income range, start with a WRAP home energy assessment. WRAP assessments are free and available by phone or in-home. An auditor will also evaluate your eligibility for additional no-cost upgrades that offer significant savings. Check your eligibility at pplelectric.com/ConnectWRAP.

No matter which option you choose, we’re here to help you find ways to save and improve your home’s energy efficiency.

About your advisor: Tracie has been with PPL Electric for nine years, serving in regional affairs, communications, and now business services supporting large power customers.
