Understanding Your Bill
PPL Electric UtilitiesYour energy dollar explained
Utility bills can be complicated to understand. We get it. That’s why we’ve broken down each dollar of your bill into four simple sections. We want you to know what you get for your hard-earned money.
We are committed to operating efficiently and controlling the costs that we can while still ensuring reliable service for our customers.

Energy Supply: 48¢
About 48¢ of each dollar covers the cost to purchase electricity from the energy supply market, since we do not generate our own electricity. If you don’t shop for a third-party electricity supplier, we purchase the power for you and pass on the cost of generation supply without markup.
Transmission: 17¢
The transmission charge is included on the supply side of your bill and helps cover the cost of infrastructure that moves electricity from power plants to the local PPL Electric distribution system.
Local Delivery: 27¢
For every dollar of your electric bill, about 27¢ goes toward the cost of delivering electricity to your home or business safely and reliably, including costs to maintain the distribution poles, wires and service. It also includes costs associated with customer support, billing and metering.
State Mandates and Taxes: 8¢
This portion is on the delivery side of your bill and includes costs associated with programs we are required to offer or participate in by law or regulation, such as Universal Service Programs, energy efficiency and taxes.
This bill breakdown is based on residential customers using 1,000 kWh with rates effective January 1, 2026. Bill will vary based on usage.

Delivery and Supply Charges
The delivery portion of your bill covers the cost to deliver power across PPL Electric’s distribution system.
The supply portion covers the cost of electricity used and transmission charges.
If you do not shop for electricity through a third-party supplier, you’ll pay the Price to Compare, or PPL Electric default rate which changes twice per year on June 1 and December 1.
All of PPL Electric’s prices on customer bills are reviewed and approved by the PA Public Utility Commission .

Delivery Details
The delivery portion of your bill covers the cost of delivering electricity to your home safely and reliably, including costs to maintain the poles, wires and service.
This charge may include:
- Customer Charge - A fixed fee covering meters, billing, and customer service.
- Distribution Energy Charge – The cost of delivering electricity from our distribution system to your home.
- Certain eligible Distribution System Improvements.

It also includes costs associated with programs we are required to offer or participate in by law or regulation, such as Universal Service Programs, energy efficiency, smart meters and PA taxes.

Supply Details
The supply portion shows the cost of electricity you use each month. It includes charges for generating power and transporting it across the transmission system.
In Pennsylvania, you can shop for a third-party electricity supplier. If you don’t shop, we purchase power for you and pass on the cost of generation supply without markup.
We don’t profit from the power generation costs within the supply portion of your bill. These charges are influenced by market prices.
This portion also includes a transmission service charge, which is a regulated fee that helps cover the cost of transporting electricity from power plants to local utilities.
